Pet care tips for summer

Lazy winters are over. It's now the time to get outdoorsy with our furbabies. However, with the temperatures starting to rise, we have to take certain precautions to make sure that they are all safe and sound. Here's how:

Make sure they have access to water

24/7. It is obvious that pets feel thirstier during hotter months. Their water intake also increases. It is our prime responsibility to make sure their water bowls are filled all the time, and they are not left needing for water.

Resting in a cool place after exercise

Pets have to cool down after an exercise or a fun game time. Although they have their own natural ways of cooling down (panting or licking their coat), it will not hurt us to assist them a bit by putting on the fan or switching on the AC. Pets who have their own beds will also be interested in sleeping on the bare & cold floor/tiles, which is completely normal. If the windows are open, draw the curtains a little bit. Remember, they cannot sweat like we do.

Make sure they are free from ticks and fleas

These pesky little creatures become active after the winters. It becomes important to have a tick/flea repellent spray for infestation prevention. In case the ticks are already present, using an anti tick spray is strongly recommended. It is already hot out there, and we don't want our babies to keep scratching themselves, do we ?

Make sure they are well groomed

Our pets' fur and coat is a natural temperature regulator, helping them to be warm in winters and cool in hot summers. Hence, it is important to keep them well groomed. A neat trim is recommended, but a clean shave is a big no-no. Shaving off their coat will tinker with their natural ability to cool off.

Watch the walk timings

Walking pets is one of the most important part of their routine. Heck, a lot of pets look forward to this time with eagerness. However, it is our responsibility that we take them for walk during the cooler times of the day in summers. A slight change in the timing is necessary to make sure that they are not walked during the late mornings, afternoons or early evenings. This change in time needs to be gradual, so that they get used to it.

Don’t leave them in the car

Leaving our pets inside the car, with the windows closed should be declared a crime !!! They tend to get suffocated, which leads to exhaustion, and even death, in some cases. If possible, take them along with you after leaving the car. If you are travelling to places that do not entertain pets, consider keeping them at home.

All in all, summer is an enjoyable time for our pets, if caution is exercised. Having said that, if they exhibit any symptoms like excessive drooling, excessive panting or increased heartbeat, do not panic and seek veterinary help immediately.

If you have any other tips, do let us know in the comments. To good times !!!
